We all know what we shouldn’t eat and drink for a healthy mouth, but did you know there are specific foods that may actually protect your mouth from cavities? Below you will find a list of those products that are believed to be beneficial to your oral health!
Have a piece of cheese!
Tooth decay occurs when enamel is broken down due to acidic environment in the mouth. Cheese helps to neutralize the environment in the oral cavity due to its high ph, helping to prevent tooth decay. It is recommended to eat a piece of cheese after consumption of sugary products in order to prevent an acidic environment in our mouth and in turn, tooth decay.
An Apple a Day Keeps the Dentist Away!
Ever had that clean teeth feeling after eating an apple? It is because apple does just that; it helps to clean our teeth and gums! This will also help to decrease the incidence of tooth decay.
Kefir contains probiotics that help our body respond to harmful bacteria, which includes bacteria that are present in our mouth as well. Streptococcus mutans is the main bacteria responsible for caries. Lactobaccilus rhamnosus that can be present in Kefir reduces the presence of Streptococcus mutants, which helps to reduce the incidence of tooth decay.
Remember to Drink Water Daily.
Not only water prevents dry mouth and dehydration, tap water can also contain fluoride, which helps to decrease the incidence of cavities. Bottled water usually lacks fluoride but it’s still my choice over sugary drinks.
Besides the products mentioned above it is also encouraged to choose foods high in vitamins because they are essential for the overall health of the teeth, gums and surrounding tissues. This includes a variety of fruits and veggies as well as dairy products.
Crunchy foods should also be considered over the soft and sticky foods. Crunchy food is beneficial to the mouth because it boost saliva production. Saliva helps to restore the ph balance in the mouth, which helps to decrease tooth decay.
On the other hand, soft, sticky foods adhere to the tooth surface. These types of foods adhere to teeth and take longer to be cleared by the oral cavity. They contribute to plaque accumulation, which is held against tissue. Soft and sticky foods greatly increase the risk of tooth decay, by becoming attached to the tissue for longer periods of time.
